Subsidies for charging stations: a welcome financial boost
As of March 31, 2025, there were 387,101 electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) on the road in Québec. With gas vehicle sales expected to drop sharply over the next decade, many people are looking to go electric quickly — and affordably! While there are financial assistance programs to help with the purchase of an EV, did you know there are also government subsidies to make buying and installing a home charging station more accessible? Here’s an overview of what’s available from all three levels of government.
Provincial
In Québec, the Roulez vert program offers a flat-rate $600 rebate for the purchase and installation of a 240-volt home charging station. Financial assistance is also available for owners of buildings with five or more units, as well as for business owners who want to install a charging station at work.
Federal
The Government of Canada doesn’t offer direct incentives for buying a home charging station, but it does fund provinces to run their own, more generous programs. It also invests in expanding public charging infrastructure nationwide.
Municipal
Many municipalities in Québec offer subsidies to make buying and installing a home charging station more affordable. The list available on the Running Electric website (an Équiterre campaign) shows amounts ranging from $100 to $500. Even better, municipal financial assistance can be combined with the provincial subsidy — making the switch even more cost-effective!
What about Hilo?
With Hydro-Québec’s Rate Flex D and Hilo’s smart EV charging solution (available at no cost), lowering your electricity bill has never been simpler. Just plug in your vehicle whenever you like, and Hilo will pause charging during peak demand events. Once the event is over, your car will automatically resume charging — no action needed on your part.
To take advantage of this automation, you need to own an EVduty charging station from Elmec (a Québec company that manufactures its stations locally) and get the Hilo hub (also free!). As a bonus, Hilo provides the Smart-Home upgrade for your EVduty station (a $100 value), offered free and applied automatically.
